|
|
When I come to a stop my brakes make I high pitched squeaking sound. There is no grinding or loss in braking effectiveness. This started a few weeks ago, and has progressively gotten worse.
Does anyone know what causes this and/or how to fix it?
Thanks |

The squeaking could be several things, but because you have full brake effectiveness one could assume it's two metal brake components rubbing against each other. However, it could be any of the following:
- Worn Brake Pads/Shoes
- Wrong Brake Pads/Shoes
- Improper Rotor Finish
- Lack of Lubrication
- Worn out Hardware
- Fatigued Brake Shoe hold down Springs (if you have drum brakes)
However, based upon your symtoms, I think it's the caliper piston(s) rubbing against the bare metal (plate) backing of the brake pad.
New brake pads come with at lease a paint coating on its plate. Under extreme pressure and rubbing, this coating wears off, and can cause this squeaking noise. This is what I think you may have, but you need to inspect your brakes to make sure!
If this is indeed the case you can lube the plate of each brake pad with a moly lube per your vehicle manufacturer's instructions. |

| If you purchase premium pads, they ussually have shims on the back of the pad plate...if they don't, thier not premium. The shim prevents squeeking, or changes the frequency so the human ear can't hear it (different material). |

high speed vibration of the brake pad can, and usually does, cause harmonic-a high-pitched squeaking-while braking.
A gel is applied to the back of the pads to eliminate this. |

| Another alternative is to put high temp anti-seize on the back of the pads. |

Since you mentioned the "high-pitched" squeal, I suggest that the front brake pads are due replacement.
Most modern pads have a small metal tang that runs alongside the pad to a point where, when the pad is about 75% worn, the pointed tang will just contact the rotor. This will cause the noise you mention and is there to alert the driver that the pads need to be looked at and probably replaced. |
