I am considering expanding the size of my basement windows. They are currently Two blocks wide by Two blocks high. I will be putting in window wells and redoing the foundation drains. It would seem to me that there is a limit to how far down the wall can be cut out without having to buttress the wall in some manner. Are there guidelines or rules regarding how much block can be cut out before the block would not be able to withstand the external ground forces? Are the ground forces light enough that this is not a concern?
Thanks |

The exterior forces shouldn't be a problem, but it might depend on your local building codes because of a specific soil composition or dynamics. The building codes between areas can be much different because of this.
Most of the problem lies with supporting the structure above the window. More than likely you need to put in some type of header above the window to support overlying floor joists.
I think the best thing for you to do is to call the planning department in your area and talk to a building inspector about what is all involved with installing an egress window. |
