My wife is at her wits end because I can't keep up with the spider population in our house. I've tried spraying them, and cleaning up their cobwebs, but hey just seem to come back. For the most part they don't migrate to any living areas, just sometimes. They seem to reside in the basement, and then eventually take a trip up a story or two, my wife screams, and I kill.

How can I avoid this viscous cycle?

BTW they're not poisonous, just annoying!

There is three main things you can do to eliminate spiders.

  1. Destroy their home - get rid of any cobwebs! This you have done, but some spiders are hunters and don't build webs! (Brown Recluse)
  2. Eliminate their food source - kill the bugs! Spray for bugs definitely outside, but maybe inside your home. Outside - spray anywhere bugs can get inside the house, particularly where the framing meets the foundation. Also spray around the whole perimeter around your house, where the foundation meets the ground. Inside (if you choose) - spray baseboards. I would use a interior/exteroir spray like Ortho's Home Defense. Spray any spiders you can see. The thing is, when you spray for spiders you have to spray them directly to kill them otherwise they won't die from the poison. They don't pick up the poise like bugs do! So if an exterminator comes out to spray your house for spiders, they aren't spraying for spiders, they are spraying for bugs and therefore eliminating the spiders food source. If spiders don't eat regularly, they just dry up and die, so they move, if there's no food.
  3. Put a dehumidifier in your basement and set it to 40% humidity. This helps dry spiders up and die in the last step.

Hope you cure this, because I know how you feel, I hate spiders!
