I'm reroofing our home and have considered putting the new layer of shingle over the old. The old shingles are still in good condition...no curling, moss, etc. I just want a new look!

My question is...Do you just put the new shingles of the old, or do you put a layer of felt over the old shingles before installing the new shingles?

Any help from a pro would be great! Very Happy

It depends on your local building code, and the manufacturer of your new shingles. However, in general, you can shingle over an existing layer of asphalt shingles, but you need to make sure they are flat (no curling or bubbles) and the roof is free of all debris.

Normally you don't need to lay down a layer of felt over your existing shingles. The only time this is recommended is when you are laying new asphalt/fiberglass shingles over wood/cedar shingles. You should trim back the shakes at the eves and rakes, install drip cap and gutter apron, and a layer of 30# felt over the old wood shingles.
