Is it possible to flush your transmission without any special tools? I have always worked on my own vehicles and would prefer to do this myself. I have changed the fluid before, but I know that just changing it like engine oil doesn't get all the old transmission fluid out.
Is this a DIY project? If so, how do you do it? |

You usually can!
It typically involves removing the return line from the transmission fluid cooler and letting the old fluid drain out of this line into a waste container of some sort, a couple quarts at a time, while you refill with new fluid, a couple quarts at a time. Once the return line fluid is new fluid, then all the fluid has been replaced.
Your vehicle may require a very different technique. Most Haynes or Chilton repair books for your type vehicle will show a similar technique.
I did a quick search for my vehicle in the web, and easily found a technique for flushing my AT. You can do the same by going to Search>Google Powered! in the menu bar above. A small google dialog box will pop-up allowing a google search. |
