|

I was wondering how often you should sharpen a lawnmower blade. Is there a predetermined amount of mowing, or is there a tell-tale sign that it's time to sharpen the blade?
Also, if you have any tips for sharpening, yea......that would be great! |

I would sharpen it just prior to your first mowing, and once again in the middle of the mowing season. You can tell that your mower blade needs sharpening by looking at your grass a day or two after you mow it. The blades of grass should have a relatively clean cut...the blades of grass shouldn't be torn. Additionally, if a dull blade "tears" your grass, your lawn will have more of a overall brown cast to it's color. This is because when a blade of grass is torn instead of cut, more of the blade of grass dies off and turns brown.

- Unless you have experience with an angle grinder, use a hand file. Electric grinders can overheat the metal and change it's properties...which makes the blade dull faster.
- Buy a cheap blade balancer. The blade acts as a flywheel to the lawnmower engine...if it's not balanced properly, it can cause unwanted vibrations and ruin the engine...not to mention your nerves!
- Don't make the blade RAZOR sharp, because the blade will dull faster.

| I would use handnhammer's recommendation an use a hand file. It will be easier to get the blade balanced, won't take off too much material, and won't over-sharpen or overheat the edge. |
