What is the minimum distance between the range top and the bottom of a microwave unit installed to replace the vent unit. I can't recall what the building code minimum is.

Thanks,

Usually state/local codes don't address this specifically, but there is typically a minimum clearance of 30" from the top of the range and any combustible materials or metal cabinets. Of course a microwave designed to go above a range is made of non-combustable material, otherwise manufacturers wouldn't be able to sell these microwaves because the the bottom would be about 5 1/2' off the ground...totally impractical for most people.

However your state/city/town may have specific code that addresses this installation. It's always best to check with your local building inspector to see!

Lacking specific code for this situation, most building inspectors would require the microwave be installed per the manufacturer's instructions. With that said...most instructions have minimum heights as shown in the attached picture below. Remember, those are minimum heights, and your cabinets, if any, should be built to this specification. If you were to use these minimum heights, and using the typical microwave height of 16-17", you would have a 13-14" clearance from the top of the range to the bottom of the microwave. This doesn't seem like much, but may be a good height for you, since you'll be lifting things into the microwave. Though it may be to low, because 13-14" wont accommodate some larger pots.

So...minus any specific local codes, and adhering to the minimum distances in the instructions (picture is typical), you can put the microwave at any height of choice!

Yeah these are the right procedures you are looking for. Just want to add that range microwave ovens help make good space of your kitchen for Wood Fired Oven. It is very usable to every home.
