We are doing some major renovations soon and I am considering installing a rectangular skylight in the kitchen and one of those new circular tube ones in the bathroom. They look cool and it would be nice to get in more natural light. I have heard stories about them leaking. I want to make sure they are not more bother then they are worth. Is it really expensive? Would you recommend skylights for the kitchen and bath?

The vast majority of skylight leaks come from improper or poor installation, not manufacturer defects. The things you need to ensure is:

- Follow the manufacturer's recommendations. This ensures the warranty, if any, remains intact.
- Carefully remove shingles surrounding the whole area, cut the hole in the roof sheathing, then relay the shingles after the skylight is in. Just don't cut a hole into the shingles.
- Use proper flashing. Most good brands of skylights, such as Velux, have custom seamless flashing that is designed for your skylight. They're expensive, but worth the piece of mind. Most circular skylights come with the flashing on them.
- Use liberal amounts of roofing tar to properly seal the skylight, or use a waterproof underlayment such as Ice Guard. Ice guard is great because when you drive fasteners through it, it seals itself up.

Here is a good ARTICLE about proper installation.
