We just put a new addition on our house and we are just roofing the new portion because we re roofed the house last year. Thankfully we have the same shingles in anticipation of the addition.

Our problem is with installing the shingles on the new portion of the roof. How do you make sure the new shingles on the addition align with the old shingles on the house? The reason why I ask is that you need to work from the bottom up otherwise working from the top down you would be lifting tabs up all day to nail down shingles and that would damage the shingles. Working from the bottom down, you aren't guaranteed of the alignment.

Snap a chaulk line! You will need to snap caulk lines for the even lapping of the shingles, so just snap a couple vertical (plumb) chaulk lines that line up with the edges of the old shingles.

You can make it sure that the new shingles and the old one can align perfectly if you must measure it first. Measure the old shingles then measure also the new one. After that, you can perfectly do the roofing process.

I think aligning the edge of new shingles to the edge of old shingles will solve your problem and align the bottom of it with the top of cutouts in the shingle.
