| I had new hardwood floor installed Fall '09.. That year's winter season was very mild.. This year however has been a cold winter - and from Nov'10, I started hearing popping noise.. many have told me that it's from my baseboard.. any idea if this is correct or suggestion for how to correct it or will it just correct itself? |

I had this problem a couple years ago. My wife kept complaining about the popping waking up our daughter int he middle of the night and I thought she was crazy. Of course she was right...like she always is.
It turns out that this wall is not centered on a bearing structure underneath so when you walk on the floor beside it, the underlayment forces the wall up and down on the nails in the sill plate causing a popping or squeaking noise. Sometimes the sill plate sticks, and pops back into place in later...like in the middle of the night.
The fix was to take off the baseboard trim, and drive large screws at an angle through the walls sill plate and flooring. It took about a dozen screws for a 12 foot wall but the popping noise was totally gone. |
