| We have an older home that as the original plaster and lath throughout the whole house, and there is some areas where the plaster is loose...it seems like it's going to fall off the wall. Does anyone know what causes this? How is it fixed without ripping it all out and drywalling? |

This sagging plaster is caused by the "keys" breaking off. When a wall is plastered, plaster spreads between and behind the wood lath. This bit of plaster hardens and forms a key to keep the plaster tight to the wall/ceiling. In time, these keys break off. If enough of them break off in one area, plaster can separate from the lath. This is what you have!
To fix it without ripping it out and replastering or sheetrocking, you need to use drywall screws and plaster washers. After you secure the plaster, you need to conceal the plaster washers with joint compound, sand, prime, and paint. I would only use this technique if it's a small area <2 square feet, otherwise your better off ripping off the old plaster and applying new.
Have fun! |
